NEEDS ANALYSIS
Needs analysis of users' sense of security
I'm limited in what I can share, so I will provide an overview without going into detailed specifics.
The system I worked on is a web application called WIS, a portal for Sweden's civil preparedness provided by MSB.
Timeline
Three weeks, while working on another project at the same time.
Background
Research
To understand the specific areas where users might feel insecure, we held a workshop with the team, simulating a crisis where everyone was assigned different roles. They needed to collaborate in WIS to create a shared situational awareness of the crisis. Additionally, we conducted three interviews with individuals from different companies who use WIS in their daily work.
Findings
To compile all the data from both the workshop and the interviews, we conducted a thematic analysis and created an affinity diagram based on our findings. What we observed was that much of the feedback centered around a lack of transparency, complex terminology, and a steep learning curve in WIS, all contributing to a sense of insecurity.
Conclusion
To focus on the most critical aspects, we created a Prioritization Matrix to determine our priorities moving forward and define our outcomes. Based on user needs, we identified user outcomes and business outcomes, which were compiled into a report that the product owner reviewed.
Challenges
When conducting the interviews, I avoided directly addressing the concept of security and instead focused on discussing the emotions they experience while carrying out their daily tasks in WIS. It was definitely challenging to navigate around the concept of security while still obtaining the desired insights.
Lessons learned
When planning the workshop where we simulated a crisis and the team received scenarios to fill in their activities, I allowed a lot of freedom. One lesson learned is that while this approach works well for some individuals, it can feel restrictive for others. Therefore, adapting the workshop more to the participants' needs is an important takeaway.
